Winter is still holding strong here, so we haven’t planted anything yet—but that doesn’t mean the homestead is standing still. This month has been all about laying the groundwork for a good growing season and keeping everyone warm while the cold snaps roll through.
Garden Planning Has Started
Even though the ground is still locked up for winter, we’re in the beginning stages of planning this year’s garden. This is the time of year where the best work happens on paper—figuring out what we’re growing, what we’re expanding, and how we’re going to make the season run smoother than last year. Spring will be here before we know it, and we want to be ready when it is.
The Birds Are Hanging Tough
The birds are doing what they do best—pushing through winter. The last few days have been especially cold, but they’re still out there, eating, moving, and getting through it. Cold weather is part of life here, and we’re just keeping an eye on them and making sure they stay comfortable and cared for.
Charlie the Bottle Calf: Growing Fast
Charlie is getting bigger and bigger by the day, and it’s been fun to watch him come into his own. He’s finally started hanging out with the bigger calves and cattle—and he’s loving every minute of it. When he gets the chance, he’s got those full-on calf “zooms,” trying to get all that energy out whenever he can.
Steve vs. Otis: Two Very Different Opinions on Winter
If you want a picture of how cold it’s been, here it is:
-
Steve is officially not a fan. The outside is cold and he knows it.
-
Otis, on the other hand, is living his best life. He loves the cold so much we can’t keep him inside for more than 30 minutes at a time before he’s ready to charge back out again.
Quiet Month for Projects
No big farm projects this month—just keeping things steady and getting ready for what’s coming. Sometimes that’s how it goes. Winter is for maintenance, planning, and getting your ducks in a row before the busy season hits.
Farmers Market Prep and… Taxes (Boo)
We’re starting to get ready for this year’s farmers market season—thinking ahead on what we’ll bring, what we want to improve, and how we can make things run better once the season starts. And right alongside that? Taxes. Enough said. Boo.
Looking Ahead
Next month we’ll keep building out the garden plan and getting lined up for the season ahead. Spring work starts fast around here—so we’re using winter time wisely.
